Evenings on a Farm near Dikanka

Vakula (Yuri Tavrov), the village blacksmith, loves Oksana (Lyudmila Myznikova), the daughter of the rich Cossack Chub (Aleksandr Khvylia), and she will marry him only if he brings her the queen's own shoes from St. Petersburg. Aleksandr Rou adapts Gogol's Christmas Eve story, taking in Vakula's mother Solokha (Lyudmila Khityaeva) and the sexton Osip Nikiforovich (Sergei Martinson). It all happens on one night, with Vakula ending up on the back of the Devil himself.
