Experiment in Evil

Maître Joly (Teddy Bilis) finds that his oldest friend, Dr. Cordelier (Jean-Louis Barrault), has written a will leaving his whole estate to a stranger named Opale. Jean Renoir sets this retelling of Stevenson's Jekyll and Hyde in 1950s France, in a Paris suburb, where Cordelier has shut himself away to study the human brain. Joly cannot understand why his friend defends a man who attacks women and children.
