Dr. Huntington Bailey (George Brent) only wants to look in on the elderly woman he met on a train, until he learns in New York that she has died suddenly. Her brother Nick (Paul Lukas) and his young wife Allida (Hedy Lamarr) receive him in their home, and Jacques Tourneur lets Bailey notice how Nick handles her. Bailey is a stranger in 1903 with nothing but suspicion, and Allida may be the one in danger.
