“What do you do when justice fails?”

In Los Angeles, a trial ends without a conviction for Robert Doob (Kiefer Sutherland), the man accused of raping and murdering 17-year-old Julie McCann. Her mother, Karen McCann (Sally Field), watches him walk free and decides she will not leave the matter to a courtroom that already failed her. John Schlesinger keeps his camera close on Karen as grief hardens into purpose, and she cannot stop to ask what it will take from her.
