Daryll Deever (William Hurt) mops floors in a New York office building and watches local news with a fan's devotion, especially the reports of Tony Sokolow (Sigourney Weaver). When a murder happens in his building, she comes to cover it, and he lets her believe he knows more than he does just to keep her near. Peter Yates follows the two as the men behind the killing start to wonder what he knows, and the lie that brought them together becomes the thing they share.
