Face to Face

Dr. Jenny Isaksson (Liv Ullmann) is a psychiatrist, living for now in her grandparents' house while her husband and daughter are away, working at a mental hospital and trusting her own steadiness. Ingmar Bergman has her answer the needs of her patients and of Dr. Tomas Jacobi (Erland Josephson) as memories from her childhood begin to press in. If they take hold, she loses the work, the composure, and the self she has built on being the one who helps.
