Richard Forst (John Marley) is a middle-aged man in the suburbs who tells his wife Maria (Lynn Carlin) he wants a divorce, then goes off to see a younger woman, Jeannie (Gena Rowlands). Maria spends the night out with her friends and ends up with Chet (Seymour Cassel), a younger man. John Cassavetes shoots it close and handheld in cinéma vérité style, so the faces fill the frame and the marriage comes apart in front of you.
