“What if you had no right to read?”

Guy Montag (Oskar Werner) is a fireman in a future where the job is to burn books, and he does it without much thought until a neighbor, Clarisse (Julie Christie), starts asking him questions. Truffaut films the sleek houses and the red engines in flat, even color, while the pages curl and blacken on the lawn. Montag has a wife who looks exactly like Clarisse, and the longer he reads, the more he sees that the two women are nothing alike.
