“Detective John Hobbes is searching for a criminal he's already met... already caught... and already killed.”

Philadelphia, and Detective John Hobbes (Denzel Washington) has just watched serial killer Edgar Reese die in the gas chamber. Then the murders start again, each one carrying Reese's signature, and Hobbes works them with his partner Jonesy (John Goodman) under Lt. Stanton (Donald Sutherland). Director Gregory Hoblit puts a man who has already closed the case back on it, and whatever is killing now seems to know exactly where he lives.
