Eric Stanton (Dana Andrews) steps off a bus in a small California town with no money and no plan, and what he wants is Stella (Linda Darnell), the waitress at the local diner, who only has time for men with cash. To get some, he starts courting June Mills (Alice Faye), a quiet, well-off woman in town. Otto Preminger keeps the diner counter and Eric's rented room in the frame, with the cheap suit and the empty pockets he cannot hide.
