Coco Hernandez (Irene Cara) wants to be a star, and so does everyone else who gets through the doors of New York's High School of Performing Arts. Alan Parker follows her and a handful of other students, including the keyboard player Bruno Martelli (Lee Curreri), from their auditions through four years of classes and rehearsals. For all of them, talent turns out to be only the ticket in, and the hard part is what they do with it.
