“FANNY IS ALL THE LOVE STORIES OF THE WORLD ROLLED INTO ONE.”

The night before Marius (Horst Buchholz) is due to ship out on a five-year voyage, Fanny (Leslie Caron) tells him she loves him, and he finds he loves her too. He is nearly nineteen, stuck in his father César's (Charles Boyer) Marseille cafe, and the sea is all he has wanted. Joshua Logan puts Fanny at the center, a girl who has to decide whether holding onto him means keeping him from the life he longs for.
