Farewell

Darya (Stefaniya Stanyuta), an old woman on the island village of Matyora, has no plan to leave the only home she has known. A dam is rising downriver, and the water will cover the huts, the graves and the island itself. Elem Klimov finished the film after his wife Larisa Shepitko died during shooting, and the village's last stubborn holdouts, Pinegin (Lev Durov) among them, are bound together by that same loss.
