Farewell to the Ark

Sutekichi Tokito (Tsutomu Yamazaki) lives in a surreal, isolated village where the old customs and superstitions are slowly being left behind as people drift off to the city. He and his cousin Sue (Mayumi Ogawa) love each other, and that puts them in a quarrel with the other villagers. Terayama, working loosely from the novel One Hundred Years of Solitude, stages all of it as a strange, stylized theater of a world coming apart.
