Jerry Lundegaard (William H. Macy), a car salesman drowning in debt, hires two small-time criminals to kidnap his wife for ransom from her father. The plan spirals into violence, and pregnant police chief Marge Gunderson (Frances McDormand) begins piecing together the bodies and the motive. The Coens shoot the frozen Minnesota landscape in flat, clinical light, letting the snow and the absurdity speak in the same blank voice.
