“Good character makes good player”

Andy (Andy Lau) is a compulsive mahjong player in Hong Kong, and the game has long since taken over everything else in his life. Around him are an aging mother, an estranged brother, a loyal ex-girlfriend and a local gang, all of whom he keeps at the edge of the table. Johnnie To and Wai Ka-fai build the comedy around him, a man who deals out tiles and cannot say what he owes the people watching.
