Father
“Diary of One Week”
In 1945 a Hungarian boy named Takó loses his father and is left with almost nothing to remember him by, so he builds a hero out of what his mother tells him. Years later András Bálint plays him as a grown man in love with Anni (Kati Sólyom), a Jewish refugee, and her history pushes him to ask what his father actually did in the war. István Szabó sets the question against 1956, with Takó's picture of his father as the thing he stands to lose.
