A young prince is about to marry, and then he learns that his bride-to-be is the mistress of Tsar Nikolai I. Prince Kasatsky (Ivan Mosjoukine) leaves court life for a monastery and takes the name Father Sergius. Protazanov, working from Tolstoy's story, follows Mosjoukine as a man who gave up everything for one belief, and who has to live inside that choice.
