Fences

“Some people build fences to keep people out, and other people build fences to keep people in.”

Troy Maxson (Denzel Washington) wants to provide for his family and to be seen as a man who counts, though in 1950s Pittsburgh both are hard to come by. He hauls garbage for a living, talks big on the porch with his friend Bono (Stephen McKinley Henderson), and answers to his wife Rose (Viola Davis). Denzel Washington directs August Wilson's play, and the poverty, the racism, and Troy's own temper keep pressing on a household that has little room to bend.
