“Freedom is costly”
Otto Goldberg (Jean-Marc Stehlé) is a passenger on a Mediterranean cruise, one of many holidaymakers talking in many languages. Jean-Luc Godard builds the film in three movements: the ship, a night when a sister and her younger brother summon their parents to answer for Liberty, Equality and Fraternity, and visits to six sites of true or false myth. Goldberg moves through the decks and the conversations, a man among strangers who still has to explain himself.
