Finch (Tom Hanks) is dying, alone on an Earth that has become close to uninhabitable, and he builds a robot to look after his dog once he is gone. Miguel Sapochnik follows the two of them as Finch teaches the machine, voiced by Caleb Landry Jones, to learn the world one task at a time. Under the lessons about the dog and the dying is a plain question of what a person owes the ones they leave behind.
