Fires on the Plain

It is the closing days of the Pacific War, and the Japanese army on the Philippine island of Leyte has come apart. Tamura (Eiji Funakoshi), a soldier with tuberculosis, is turned away by his own company and sent off alone with nowhere to report. Kon Ichikawa follows him across the island, a sick man with little food and no orders, and his survival depends on how far he can keep walking.
