Fires on the Plain

In the last days of World War II, Japanese troops in the Philippines are cut off and hunted by both the American advance and the local population. Private Tamura (Shinya Tsukamoto), sick and cast out by his own unit, drifts through the countryside among other dwindling soldiers. Tsukamoto, adapting Shōhei Ōoka's 1951 novel, sets his survivors against a war that has already used up everything but their will to live.
