“Jake Livingston had to grow up fast... because his mother didn't.”

Since his parents divorced, Jake Livingston (Christopher Collet) has been the man of the house, looking after his mother Wendy (Teri Garr) and his younger brother Brian (Corey Haim). Then Wendy starts seeing Sam (Peter Weller), who is always chasing some new way to get rich quick, and he moves in and claims Jake's place. Michael Apted follows Jake as he finds out what Sam is mixed up in, with his mother's home and his brother caught in the middle.
