Joseph W. Randall (Edward G. Robinson) is the editor of a New York tabloid, and he is told by its owner to print a serial built on an old murder case. The woman tied to that case has spent years putting it behind her, and Mervyn LeRoy shows how the paper's search for headlines reaches her family. Jenny Townsend (Marian Marsh) and her father, Michael (H.B. Warner), are caught between the story in print and the life she is trying to keep.
