Why does a carnival dancer, left behind by the show she travelled with, become the one person a whole town's political boss wants gone? Lane Bellamy (Joan Crawford) lands in a small town after the carnival moves on, and Sheriff Titus Semple (Sydney Greenstreet) takes an interest in her. Michael Curtiz keeps the story in the drawing rooms and back offices where this town does its business.
