“Here's to risks.”

Danny Embling (Noah Taylor) is a stammering, freethinking teenager at a boys' boarding school in Australia, where the teachers expect obedience and the other boys expect him to fall in line. Across the lake sits the girls' school, and there he meets Thandiwe Adjewa (Thandiwe Newton), who fights the same kind of authority her own way. John Duigan follows them with Nicola Radcliffe (Nicole Kidman) nearby, the lake between the two schools.
