Jim Gordon (John Wayne) commands a squadron of American volunteer pilots flying for China against the Japanese, months before the United States enters the war. His fighters are badly outnumbered, and he has to keep sending them up while managing Woody Jason (John Carroll), Hap Smith (Paul Kelly) and the rest of a crew with their own grudges and troubles. David Miller keeps the film in black and white and moves it briskly between the airfield and the air.
