Lem Siddons (Fred MacMurray) plays saxophone in a traveling band, but he has always meant to become a lawyer, and he gets off the bus in a small town to find out why that plan never starts. He takes a job as a stockboy at the general store and, to fit in, volunteers as scoutmaster of the newly formed Troop 1. Norman Tokar follows the town's boys and the people around Lem, and the film quietly argues that a life can be worth what you give to other people's children.
