A drifter named Manco (Clint Eastwood) and a former colonel named Mortimer (Lee Van Cleef) both chase the same bounty: El Indio (Gian Maria Volonté), a bandit holed up in the desert with his gang. The two men circle each other as much as their prey, each testing whether the other can be trusted or used. Manco discovers that Mortimer's hunt for Indio is personal, rooted in a violence that money alone cannot settle.
