For Whom the Bell Tolls

(1943)Directed by Sam Wood170 min · GWar, Romance, History, Drama, Adventure
“Thunderous! Tender! Touching!”

Spain in the 1930s is in the middle of a civil war, and Robert Jordan (Gary Cooper), an American who has joined the side that appeals to idealists, gets sent up into the mountains. His job is to wait for the right moment and blow a crucial bridge to stop the enemy's advance. Sam Wood films the guerrilla camp, and Jordan's meeting there with Maria (Ingrid Bergman), as an epic in broad strokes.
