“Her Greatest Dramatic Role !”

Lulu Smith (Barbara Stanwyck), a small-town librarian, books a cruise to Cuba in 1932 and falls for Robert Grover (Adolphe Menjou) aboard the ship. Back home, she ends it when he tells her he is married, and she keeps what comes next to herself while his political career climbs. Capra shoots Stanwyck close and steady, so every held-back look reads plainly across her face.
