Carroll Shelby (Matt Damon) is an American car designer who has to build Ford a racecar that can beat Enzo Ferrari's at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in France in 1966. He brings in Ken Miles (Christian Bale), a British-born driver who won't take orders from a corporation, and James Mangold stages their fight against Ford's interference as hard as the races. Under the engine noise it is about men who care more about getting the work right than about who gets the credit.
