Forest of the Hanged

Apostol Bologa (Victor Rebengiuc) is an ethnic Romanian serving as an officer in the Habsburg Army in 1916, wearing the uniform of an empire that does not speak for him. Liviu Ciulei, who also appears as Captain Klapka, adapts Liviu Rebreanu's novel and follows Bologa as the Romanian Army waits across the enemy lines. If he stays loyal to the Habsburgs, he fights his own people; if he deserts, he crosses the front and risks his life.
