Why would a decorated officer take a post nobody wants? Lt. Col. Owen Thursday (Henry Fonda) rides into Fort Apache convinced the desolate command is his chance at the honour he thinks he is owed. Captain Kirby York (John Wayne) knows the country and the Apache chief Cochise, and John Ford sets his advice against Thursday's rigid devotion to military form, with Sgt. Maj. O'Rourke (Ward Bond) drilling the men beneath the fort's flag.
