A group of kids on holiday in Cornwall want a summer that feels like theirs, and they find the means on the beach in the form of the Psammead (voice of Michael Caine), a creature who grants wishes. David (Matthew Goode) is along for the trip, unaware of what the children have found. De Emmony, adapting Jacqueline Wilson's novel, keeps the camera at the kids' height and the Cornish coast bright around them.
