Four Nights of a Dreamer

On a Paris bridge at night, Jacques (Guillaume des Forêts), a young man with artistic aspirations, stops Marthe (Isabelle Weingarten) from throwing herself into the river. She agrees to meet him again, and over four evenings they walk the streets together while she tells him about the lover she is waiting for. Robert Bresson, loosely adapting Dostoyevsky's "White Nights," leaves Jacques more in love with her at every meeting, and no more able to say so.
