An Army mule named Francis starts talking to Lt. Peter Stirling (Donald O'Connor) during World War II, and nobody else can hear a word. Each time Peter insists on it, his superiors send him to the psychiatric ward. Arthur Lubin keeps Francis dry and unbothered, with Chill Wills supplying the mule's voice, so Peter is the only one in the film who ever looks rattled.
