“For justice. For pride. For freedom.”

In 1863, Newton Knight (Matthew McConaughey), a Mississippi farmer serving as a medic, is branded a deserter after his nephew dies in battle. He flees to the swamps of Jones County, where runaway slaves hide and Moses Washington (Mahershala Ali) sets the terms of any alliance. Gary Ross builds the story on a plain, hard idea: poor farmers and the enslaved fought the same war for different reasons and came to the same enemy.
