“Their story. Their world. Their future.”

Nobody at the school expects the freshman English class to last the year, and the teacher walking into it has never taught before. Erin Gruwell (Hilary Swank) faces a room of at-risk students who sort themselves by race and want nothing to do with her or her reading list. Richard LaGravenese follows her as she tries to reach them, with her job, her marriage to Scott Casey (Patrick Dempsey) and her students' shot at college all on the line.
