In Gannon, a mostly Black New Jersey town beside a white neighborhood, a bleeding woman turns up at a hospital and says a Black man carjacked her with her young son in the back seat. Detective Lorenzo Council (Samuel L. Jackson) takes the case, and Brenda Martin (Julianne Moore) tells it in pieces that do not quite hold together. Joe Roth sets the search against a growing racial standoff, and every hour the boy stays missing makes it harder to contain.
