French Cancan

(1955)Directed by Jean Renoir102 minComedy, Drama, Romance, Music

In nineteenth-century Paris, the impresario Henri Danglard (Jean Gabin) is set on building a dance hall and filling it with the cancan, a dance most of the city still thinks too rowdy for a respectable audience. His two women are Lola (María Félix), a belly-dancer, and Nini (Françoise Arnoul), a working girl he is turning into a cancan star. Jean Renoir fills Danglard's Moulin Rouge with petticoats, feathers and a pit of musicians playing at full volume.
