Frida Kahlo (Salma Hayek Pinault) is lying in a hospital bed after a crippling injury, and she starts to paint because it is the one thing she can still do. She later marries Diego Rivera (Alfred Molina), the celebrated muralist, and their tempestuous life together feeds directly into her canvases. Julie Taymor stages the film as a biography that lets Kahlo's paintings move into the frame.
