Why does an entire West Texas town hand its hopes to a team of teenagers? In Odessa in 1988, the Permian High Panthers carry that weight into every game, and when tailback Boobie Miles (Derek Luke) goes down in the opener, new coach Gary Gaines (Billy Bob Thornton) has to hold together players like Mike Winchell (Lucas Black) and Don Billingsley (Garrett Hedlund).
