“The secret of life? The secret's in the sauce.”

Evelyn Couch (Kathy Bates), a housewife stuck in a marriage that has stopped noticing her, sits in a nursing home waiting room and gets talked at by Ninny Threadgoode (Jessica Tandy). Ninny's stories take them back to 1920s Whistle Stop, Alabama, to Idgie (Mary Stuart Masterson) and Ruth (Mary-Louise Parker), and Jon Avnet moves between the two worlds. Each visit shows Evelyn that a friendship can change how a person stands in her own life.
