Private Robert E. Lee "Prew" Prewitt (Montgomery Clift) transfers to a Hawaii infantry company in 1941 and refuses to box for its team, though the captain wants a champion. Fred Zinnemann follows the company's punishment of him alongside First Sergeant Milton Warden (Burt Lancaster) and the captain's wife, Karen Holmes (Deborah Kerr), who begin an affair. Prew takes every cruelty the unit hands him and will not give in, though it costs him more each week.
