From Morning to Midnight
The Kassierer (Ernst Deutsch) is a bank cashier in a small German town whose routine breaks when a rich Italian lady (Erna Morena) comes to his window. He takes 60,000 marks from the till and leaves for the capital, hoping politics, sport, love and religion might give him what the money cannot. Karlheinz Martin built the world of this 1920 silent from jagged painted sets, and between the cashier and the Dame lies the one glance that sends him running.
