“You can't buy respectability by putting a wedding ring on it!”

David Alfred Eaton (Paul Newman) is the son of a Pennsylvania steel mill owner, and he wants to make a fortune in New York that has nothing to do with his father's name. He marries Mary St. John (Joanne Woodward), who is unfaithful, and climbs the city's financial world while the marriage comes apart. Mark Robson follows him toward the top, where Alfred must pick between the career he has built and Natalie Benziger (Ina Balin).
