Frozen River

“Desperation Knows No Borders”

Ray Eddy (Melissa Leo) is a mother of two boys, including her son TJ (Charlie McDermott), short on money and stuck living in a trailer. Courtney Hunt's debut sets her beside Lila Littlewolf (Misty Upham), a Mohawk woman who offers a way to earn cash by smuggling undocumented immigrants from Canada into the United States. The two women start out wary and nearly silent around each other, each one a mother with her own reasons for needing the work.
