Pvt. Joker (Matthew Modine) arrives at Parris Island to become a Marine, where Gny. Sgt. Hartman (R. Lee Ermey) breaks down recruits through relentless abuse and contempt. The film moves from boot camp to Vietnam, following Joker and his unit through a city under siege as the fighting intensifies. Kubrick shoots both worlds in cold, unflinching light, letting the dread accumulate without mercy.
