Pvt. Joker (Matthew Modine) is a pragmatic Marine recruit who keeps a wry distance from everything around him, even at Parris Island, where Gny. Sgt. Hartman (R. Lee Ermey) breaks the platoon down and Pvt. Pyle (Vincent D'Onofrio) starts to come apart. From there the film follows Joker into Vietnam and the street fighting in Hue, where the training meets the war. Kubrick shoots the barracks and the ruined city with the same cold, level stare.
